What is grammar, and exactly why it matters

Quite a few of my posts this year were all about how much grammar technical editors need to know to be good editors. This morning, my Twitter feed led me to the following blog post that sums up my views precisely. Go read this blog post: “Grammar, brain surgery, and idiots: Why pedants and creative hippies have got it wrong.” Instead of just retweeting this link, I had to make it a part of my own blog, to end my musings on this topic for the year, and hopefully move on to something else of interest.

    Oh my gosh….Look at how Michelle used “hopefully” there! And she calls herself a careful editor. Harrumph!

    ‘Course, that’s the whole point, isn’t it? You broke a rule that was dumb and arbitrary, and your writing didn’t suffer one bit. Thanks for the link to Andy’s blog post. I enjoyed reading it.
